【1500 yen】Experience the Beautiful Scenery of Mount Bandai and a World of Wonders: "Salvador Dalí Exhibition – The Secrets of a Genius"

The exhibition was held from April 20 to September 1, 2024, and has already ended.

The year 2024 marks a significant milestone in modern art history, especially in the realm of Surrealism, as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Surrealist Manifesto and the 120th anniversary of Salvador Dalí's birth.

To commemorate this important year, the exhibition "Salvador Dalí – The Secrets of a Genius" was held until September 1, 2024.

The venue, the Morohashi Museum of Modern Art, is renowned for having one of the world's largest collections of Dalí's works and is often referred to as the "Dalí Museum." I enjoyed not only Dalí's works but also the breathtaking scenery of Mount Bandai.

A Special Exhibition Unveiling the "Secrets of a Genius" to Celebrate Dalí's 120th Anniversary

Yes, it's the Dalí Exhibition! The Secrets of a Genius! (Cue your favorite outing-ready outfit.)

The "Salvador Dalí Exhibition – The Secrets of a Genius" explores Dalí's life as an artist from both his Surrealist side and his human side.

Dalí, who "became a genius by acting like one," was said to have been quite a sensitive person. As I immersed myself in his paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures, I felt as if I were being drawn into the dreamlike fantasies born of his obsessive love.

Although Dalí is known for his striking imagery, his technical skill is undeniable. The beauty of the lines in his still lifes is breathtaking.

In addition, works depicting Dalí’s muses—his mother, sister, and wife—made me wonder about the different kinds of love he directed toward each of them.

It’s only natural that the love he felt for them would differ, considering they were different people at different stages of his life, each having their own unique experiences. Yet, the atmosphere and energy emanating from each work felt so distinct, making it incredibly fascinating.

The digital signage at the entrance not only displayed exhibition information but also the available payment methods.

The exhibition, titled "The Secrets of a Genius," showcased Dalí's works from his early to later years, and what stood out the most were his portraits of his beloved wife, Gala.

You could sense the deep, profound love he had for his mother, and after her death, his obsessive affection for his sister, Maria, was reflected in his works, giving off a sense of pure, clear emotion. However, when it came to his wife, Gala, there was an intensity and warmth that felt almost humid.

Dalí may have experienced a different kind of love for Gala, distinct from his familial bonds. It also seemed like they served as trophies for each other in a way.

Gala was Dalí’s overwhelming muse. On the other hand, perhaps Gala was captivated by the glory of having such a genius at her side. Knowing about their later years together made me wonder about this dynamic. Of course, only they would know the truth.

It was a rainy day, but still beautiful.

In addition to Dalí's works, the exhibition also featured pieces by artists like de Chirico, Miró, Magritte, and Ernst—artists synonymous with Surrealism.

For me, it was especially moving to see an Ernst piece in person for the first time. While Dalí seemed to actively craft a world according to his own vision, Ernst appeared to build on the chance occurrences that appeared on his canvas, creating something new from them.

Though they were both Surrealists, each artist's approach had its own distinct flavor, showing that even within the same movement, individual sensibilities and perspectives varied greatly.

For someone who hasn't formally studied art and just loves what they love, the experience was deeply insightful and fulfilling.

I had to buy the exhibition catalog. A must-have!

A Moment of Rest at the Museum Café: Collaboration Drinks

After enjoying such a powerful exhibition, of course, you'll be hungry.

The Morohashi Museum of Modern Art has a café located to the right of the entrance, offering coffee, light meals, and during the exhibition, exclusive collaboration drinks.

The special "Dalí Gourmet Sea Soda" is priced at 880 yen, and the Basil Chicken Focaccia is 800 yen (both prices include tax).

The limited-edition "Dalí Gourmet Sea Soda" is a refreshing summer drink inspired by the sky and sea of Dalí’s hometown, Figueres.

The basil chicken focaccia is the perfect size for a small meal, with chicken and a basil-flavored white sauce sandwiched between the bread.

The soda is topped with lemon peel sorbet and raspberries, with a dash of salt on the rim of the cup.

Another menu item is the "Muse Gala Love Soda," made with cranberry and lemon, inspired by Dalí’s beloved wife, Gala. The blend of yellow and red colors certainly gives it a "Gala-esque" impression.

How to Get to the Morohashi Museum of Modern Art: Take the Bus from JR Inawashiro Station

After arriving at Koriyama Station by bullet train, transfer to the Banetsu West Line. As you travel from the city to the countryside and then into the mountains, the journey itself is an exciting part of the trip.

I was fascinated by how the lush green mountains gradually transformed into individual trees. I found myself wondering, “When exactly does a mountain become a forest?” or gazing at distant mountains and thinking, "It looks like broccoli." Before I knew it, I had arrived at Inawashiro Station, about 45 minutes later.

From there, take the Aizu Bus Bandai Highlands Line from the bus stop to the right of the station. The ride takes about 25 minutes and costs 780 yen, payable in cash only. While you can exchange money beforehand, having small change on hand is a good idea.

Greeted by Stunning Scenery

When I stepped out after the exhibition, the sky had cleared! How perfect!

After getting off the bus, the air was so fresh! Thank you, Mount Bandai!

And what a breathtaking view! On clear days, the contrast between the green trees and the blue sky is stunning. You’ll find yourself taking deep breaths to fully enjoy the fresh air, even though you're standing on a public road.

The welcome sign and helpful guides added a cute touch. Thanks!

Beyond the special exhibition, the permanent collection of sculptures is also worth your time.

Immersing yourself in the world of Surrealism, surrounded by beautiful scenery and fresh air, is an experience I highly recommend.
