Since its anime debut in 1984, the "Transformers" series has remained a beloved franchise across multiple generations.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the special exhibition "Transformers Expo 2024" is currently being held at the Warehouse Terrada G1 Building in Tennozu Isle, Shinagawa, Tokyo.

As someone whose exposure to Transformers has been mostly through the live-action movies, I initially felt like a casual fan wading in shallow waters. However, I ended up having an absolute blast!

A Treasure Trove of Rare Collectibles for Hardcore Fans

Upon entering, visitors are greeted by an impressive display leading into an extensive collection of invaluable materials.

From incredibly rare artifacts that feel like miraculous survivors to Marvel Comics editions, international releases, children’s magazine novelties, and toy-inserted pamphlets—the variety on display is astounding.

Even for a casual observer like me, the excitement was undeniable. For long-time fans, this must be an absolute paradise. I overheard young fans, influenced by their parents' enthusiasm, excitedly exclaiming, "Do you have this one? I wish I did!"

Relentless Dedication to Product Development

Unicron—this thing transforms into a sphere. How cool is that?

Takara Tomy has released numerous Transformers figures over the years. While I primarily associate Transformers with the live-action films, I imagine that for veteran fans, the anime and collectible figures hold equal significance.

The sheer craftsmanship, intricate transformations, and attention to detail make these figures more than just toys. Holding one in your hands is like plunging into the deep end of fandom—it’s easy to see why collectors become so invested.

One of the highlights of the exhibit is the staggering number of development sketches. These drawings are incredibly detailed, showcasing front, back, top-down, and transformation sequences with meticulous precision.

Even as a non-expert, I was amazed at how much information was packed into a single sheet while remaining easy to understand.

Oh, and by the way, I have a soft spot for Bumblebee. He’s just so adorable.

The exhibit also explores the evolution of sculpting techniques. While digital modeling has become the standard today, skilled artisans once meticulously crafted physical prototypes.

The process involved creating a larger, expressive sample before shrinking it down—a fascinating glimpse into the craftsmanship behind these figures.

I nearly gave in to temptation here.

If I didn’t have any major expenses coming up, I would have walked away with a 20,000-yen figure. The craftsmanship is just that breathtaking.

The Unique Charms of Anime, Figures, and Live-Action Films

With countless characters appearing across different series, my knowledge was mostly limited to the main cast featured in the live-action films. However, as I explored the exhibition, I kept thinking, "Wow, there are so many amazing characters! No wonder people get hooked!"

Throughout the venue, various series' footage and audio clips play, including some humorous moments. The event organizers truly understand how to immerse visitors in the Transformers world.

The Perfect Blend of Cool, Cute, and Intricate Design

We'll go outside later, okay?

Bumblebee’s charm was off the charts! I even bought a small figure and have been staring at it while writing this. So cute.

Several large statues are also on display, and they are absolutely stunning. Some exhibits allow you to view the figures from behind, showcasing their intricate craftsmanship in full detail.

I also found myself captivated by Optimus Prime’s gaze in promotional materials for the upcoming movie, Transformers ONE (releasing September 20, 2024). Even among comrades, the way he looks at Bumblebee versus Megatron conveys a subtle difference in tone and emotion.

Discoveries from an Anime Newcomer

The Transformers: Cyberverse anime, streamed from April 2019 to January 2020, follows Bumblebee as he regains lost memories with the help of his friend, Windblade.

And speaking of Windblade—she is absolutely stunning. How did I not know about her before? The side profile in her concept art is breathtaking. I literally sighed in admiration.

Although I watched Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023), I had never explored the Beast Wars anime. While reading character descriptions, I kept having "Oh, they’re close friends?!" moments. The exhibition was filled with similar discoveries.

Side note: If you haven’t seen Rise of the Beasts, Mirage is an absolute standout. Whether in the original or dubbed version, his charismatic and passionate personality shines through. Definitely worth checking out.

A Comprehensive and Well-Organized Official Guidebook

Photography is prohibited for certain exhibits, but don’t worry—the official guidebook contains all the displayed materials.

Think of it as a Transformers-themed history textbook. If you want to revisit the details later, this book is a must-have.

Event Details: Warehouse Terrada G1 Building, Until September 29, 2024!

The venue is the Warehouse Terrada G1 Building, conveniently located near Tennozu Isle Station on the Rinkai Line and Tokyo Monorail.

The area is filled with towering buildings, but the streets are well-organized, making navigation easy. Both stations are about a five-minute walk away. Even a self-proclaimed "expert at getting lost" like me made it there effortlessly!

I'm having a really delicious time.

The exhibition ends with an original stop-motion short film, which was so moving that I almost teared up.

Whether you’re here to revisit Transformers' history or to explore something new, Transformers Expo 2024 offers an overwhelming depth of content. Why not dive into the world of Transformers yourself?
