【660 yen〜1650 yen】Breaking Industry Norms? The Fireworks Industry Veteran Wakamatsuya Presents “Eco-Packaged Fireworks” Vol.1

Fireworks are usually known for their flashy, eye-catching packaging. But this year, Wakamatsuya is shaking things up with their Eco-Packaged Fireworks once again.

While packaging is important, what’s inside matters even more. Prioritizing substance over flash, this product is a reflection of the company's values. I had the pleasure of visiting Wakamatsuya's showroom to learn more about this unique product, and in this first article, I’ll introduce what Eco-Packaged Fireworks are and the efforts behind their development.

What Are Eco-Packaged Fireworks?

As the name suggests, Eco-Packaged Fireworks are an environmentally-friendly product developed by Japan’s leading fireworks manufacturer, Wakamatsuya. These fireworks break away from industry norms by featuring simple, compact designs and packaging that reduce environmental impact.

This set of fireworks minimizes the use of plastic, lowers manufacturing and shipping costs, and even increases the quantity of fireworks by 20%. Born out of Wakamatsuya’s commitment to the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), the Eco-Packaged Fireworks are a true reflection of their environmental consciousness.

Seven Categories of SDG Initiatives

What can a fireworks company possibly do to contribute to the SDGs? Initially, I thought the best they could manage would be reducing plastic and cutting down CO2 emissions or manufacturing costs. My understanding was narrow, to say the least!

However, Wakamatsuya's initiatives go far beyond my expectations, proving why they are the industry’s top company.

I had the opportunity to speak with their Sales and PR representative, Mr. Takeuchi, who kindly and openly shared more about their efforts.

Here are five concrete initiatives they’ve taken:

1. Reducing Packaging Materials: Absolutely Zero Plastic!

With stylish craft paper packaging.

Traditional toy fireworks (like sparklers) often came in plastic packaging, with plastic bags and sheets, and even tape used to secure fireworks to their packaging. All this created a lot of waste.

The Eco-Packaged Fireworks eliminate all that unnecessary waste by adopting an all-paper packaging. This innovative design not only benefits the environment but also adds convenience, as the entire package can be thrown out with regular combustible garbage after use.

2. Reducing Manufacturing Costs: Less Work, More Fireworks

Eco-Packaged Fireworks come directly packed in their final package. By eliminating steps like sorting fireworks into smaller bags and attaching them to cardboard inserts, they’ve simplified the manufacturing process.

The savings in manufacturing costs have allowed Wakamatsuya to increase the number of fireworks by 20%. That’s a win for consumers too!

3. Lowering Shipping Costs: The Impact of Smaller Packaging

Compared to standard fireworks packaging, Eco-Packaged Fireworks are significantly more compact. The smaller package size means more units can be transported at once.

This reduction in packaging size has a big impact—fewer trucks are needed to transport the same amount of product, leading to a reduction in CO2 emissions.

4. Preserving Fireworks Culture: Hosting Workshops

Wakamatsuya’s Eco-Packaged Fireworks reflect their desire to help people enjoy fireworks even more. Thanks to the reductions in materials, costs, and shipping, they’ve been able to increase the quantity of fireworks by 20%.

Additionally, they host community workshops, such as “Fireworks Maker Experiences” that use no gunpowder, and workshops where participants can make their own real sparklers. These efforts play a vital role in preserving traditional fireworks culture.

Partnership: Working Together to Bring Fireworks to Consumers

Wakamatsuya's job isn't just about making fireworks.

They work closely with retailers nationwide, ensuring that Eco-Packaged Fireworks are safely distributed and reach as many consumers as possible.

Packaging Reduction: Here's How Much They've Saved!

Traditional fireworks packaging used to involve more materials than you'd think—large outer bags, smaller bags to separate different types of fireworks, and tape to secure them to cardboard inserts.

As part of their commitment to the SDGs, Wakamatsuya launched their Eco-Packaged Fireworks in 2023, successfully reducing 1.8 tons of paper (equivalent to 420,000 A4 sheets) and 0.8 tons of plastic (equivalent to 26,000 500ml PET bottles).

For 2024, their goal is to cut down 11 tons of paper (equivalent to 2.42 million A4 sheets) and 4.1 tons of plastic (equivalent to 140,000 500ml PET bottles).

It’s great that these numbers are so clear! Many people wonder how impactful things like plastic bags or straws really are. Seeing these figures makes it easier to feel like choosing the eco-friendly option is the right thing to do!

Not only do Eco-Packaged Fireworks make cleanup easier, but by choosing them, you're also making a positive impact on the environment. It feels good to know you’re contributing to the solution while having fun, making it a win-win!
