【Under 500yen】Affordable, Delicious, Fun – The Ultimate Snack Hunt: ‘NAMAN’ Shrimp Heads

“What is the ultimate delicious snack... in the end?” It's an eternal question that every alcohol lover seeks to answer. In pursuit of this, I, a die-hard lover of spicy food and a devoted drinker, will introduce snacks that are "cheap," "delicious," and "easy" to prepare.

Do You Eat Shrimp Heads?

There are countless food debates in the world. From the infamous “Kinoko no Yama vs Takenoko no Sato” debate that supposedly divides Japan in two, to whether or not to squeeze lemon on fried chicken, whether onigiri seaweed should be crispy or soft, and of course, whether to eat the tail of fried shrimp—these are classic food battles.

The argument over whether to eat or leave the tail of fried shrimp has been fiercely contested for years with no clear winner. However, the debate over whether to eat the head of the shrimp seems likely to end quickly.

The result, of course, is a decisive loss for the pro-eating side.

As a lover of rare delicacies and a true drinker at heart, I fall into the "I want to eat it, but I refrain" camp. I love the crispy texture and shrimp miso, but if someone says, "I eat the tail, but the head is a bit much," I’ll shyly push it to the edge of my plate.

But shrimp heads are delicious, aren’t they? And they go so well with alcohol.

The shrimp miso itself is a popular delicacy, so why does eating the head suddenly make you seem eccentric? Despite my complaints, I only fully enjoy them at home.

For those hesitant shrimp head lovers like me, I’ve found the perfect snack. A crispy treat from Korea called "Shrimp Heads"!

‘NAMAN’ Shrimp Heads

25g ¥250 (tax included)

You can't help but laugh at the straightforward name. This snack is literally fried shrimp heads, aptly named "Shrimp Heads."

In Korea, it’s sold under the name "Saeu Mori," which means shrimp (saeu) head (mori). So either way, the name is spot on.

The back of the package shows a line-up of examples—it’s a surreal sight.

Upon opening, you'll find plenty of small shrimp heads. They appear to be from smaller shrimp, possibly sweet shrimp.

As for the taste, it’s incredibly fragrant! The crispy texture is fantastic. It seems to include garlic powder and other seasonings, but the natural shrimp flavor stands out. It feels like redemption for all the shrimp heads I’ve left behind on fried shrimp in the past.

It’s truly impressive how the entire shrimp, from head to tail, is so delicious.

Eat the Shrimp Heads!

Crispy, fragrant, and perfect as a snack. They pair well with beer, but would also go nicely with sake or shochu. The seasoning is relatively light, so it doesn’t overpower the taste of your drink. The small size is another appealing factor.

Shrimp heads are no longer something to leave behind—they’re something to enjoy! This snack is sure to change your perception!
